Valentines day

This is an old poem I wrote back in 2008 and I thought I would repost it here for the benefit of readers.

by Ahmed

Valentines day is here
its the same each year

we are hit in the pocket
people dash last minute to the supermarket

to buy their loved one a gift
so they can have a temporary lift

and then the day is gone
as quickly as the dawn

and its back to reality for all
til next years valentines call

good mood and emotions consigned to the past
all year they could never last

stop copying bill, freda and ted
why dont we instead do what Islam said

Your situation do assess
Read about how marriage in Islam is blessed

and follow the prophetic example
Sunnahs to follow, so ample

Realise that valentines is just a trick
simply another scheme to get rich quick!

Five Things to Act Upon

It is related by Abu Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu: “[Once] the Apostle of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said to us: ‘Who is there to learn these few things from me, and, then, to act upon them and to tell them also to others who will act ?’ I replied, ‘O Apostle of Allah! I am present.’ The Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam thereupon, held my hand [in affection] and said, ‘Refrain from the acts Allah has forbidden and refrain from them strictly. If you will do so, you are a very great worshipper [and this worship is better than the abundance of supererogatory (nafl) prayers]. Secondly, remain satisfied with what Allah has fore-ordained for you. If you do so, you will attain contentment and become very rich. Thirdly, be kind and gentle in your behaviour towards the neighbours. If you will do so, you are a perfect believer. Fourthly, desire for yourself what you desire for others. If you do so, you will become a true Muslim. Fifthly, do not laugh much for too much laughter kills the heart.”
Musnad-i-Ahmed, Tirmidhi

Commentary
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam wanted to tell the five above mentioned things. In order to attract the attention of the listeners, he first said, “I want to tell a few special things. Who among you will like to learn them? But he will have to pay back their claim by acting upon them himself, and, also, relating them to others so that they, too, may profit.”
It shows that there are two claims on anyone who acquires the knowledge of faith, he should act according to it and, also, pass it on to others. Even if he does not carry out into practice fully what he learns, he must not refrain from imparting it to others.

The five things the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam has taught in this Tradition are of fundamental importance.

(i) He is most devout bondsman and a great worshipper who abstains from what is unlawful though he may not be offering up a great deal of supererogatory (nafl) prayers and observing much of supererogatory fasts.

(ii) One derives immense satisfaction and peace of mind from being content with what Allah has decreed for him.

(iii) Good and noble behaviour towards the neighbour is a prerequisite of perfection in Faith.

(iv) A true Muslim must always wish well of others to the extent of desiring for them what he desires for himself.

(v) One should not laugh much because excessive laughter deprives the heart of feeling and makes it insensitive.

Junaid Baghdadi and Love for Allah

Once at the time of Hajj, there was a gathering in Mecca of some friends of Allah; the youngest among whom was Junaid Baghdadi (ra). In that gathering, there was a discussion on the subject of ‘Love for Allah’ and as to who is the lover of Allah. Many of them expressed their views on the subject, but Junaid (ra) kept quiet. He was pressed to say something.

With his head bowed down and tears in his eyes, he said, “The lover of Allah is he who forgets his own self, remains engaged in Allah’s remembrance with due regard to all its requirements; sees Allah with the eyes of his heart, which is burnt by the heat of Allah’s fear; Allah’s remembrance affects him like a cup of wine, he speaks the word of Allah as if All-Mighty Allah speaks through his mouth; if he moves, he does so under the command of Allah; he gets peace of mind only through the obedience of Allah; and when such a stage is reached, his eating, drinking, sleeping, awakening and, in short, all his actions are for the pleasure of Allah; he neither pays heed to the worldly customs, nor does he attach any importance to unfriendly criticism by people.”

Actions of Worth

That action is worthy to pursue which brings you close to Allah Ta’ala and elevates you. And those actions which do not bring the nearness of Allah Ta’ala are not worth pursuing.
Extract from ’99 Golden Advices for All Saalikeen’ by Maulana Muhammad zakariyya kandhlawi

Ten Things We Waste

1. Knowledge: Wasted when not taking action with it.

2. Actions: Wasted when we do anything without sincerity. Intentions count.

3. Wealth: Wasted when used on things that will not bring us Ãjr (reward). We waste our money, our status, our authority, on things that have no benefit in this life or in Ãkhirah (The Hereafter).

4. Hearts: Wasted when empty from the love of Allah, and the longing for Him, and devoid of peace & contentment.

5. Bodies: Wasted when we don’t use them in ibÃdah (worship) and service of Allah in serving humankind.

6. Love: Wasted when our emotional love is misdirected, not towards Allah, but towards something/someone else.

7. Time : Wasted when not used properly, by not doing what is righteous.

8. Intellect : Wasted on things that are detrimental to society and the individual, not in contemplation or reflection.

9. Service: Wasted when in service of someone who will not bring us closer to Allah.

10. Dhikr: Wasted when it does not have an effect on our hearts.

Non Acceptance of Du’aas

Abu Is’haaq Ebrahim Ibne Ad’ham was once passing through a bazaar in Basrah. It ws said unto him: “O Abu Is’haaq, verily Allah has declared ‘Ask Me, I will grant you your request.’ Why is it that we make du’aa and He does not accept?” Abu Ishaaq replied: “Surely it is because your hearts have become dead, due to ten things:

1 You have known who Allah is, yet you have not fulfilled His duties;
2 You have recited the Qur’aan, yet you have not practiced upon it;
3 You have proclaimed the love of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, yet you have not practiced upon his sunnah;
4 You have pronounced that the shaytaan is your enemy, yet you have stood with him;
5 You have pronounced your desire for jannah, yet you have done nothing to achieve it;
6 You have pronounced your fear for jahannam, yet you have done nothing to escape it;
7 You have proclaimed that there surely is no escape from death, yet you do not prepare for it;
8 You have indulged in seeking the faults of others, and have left looking into your own faults;
9 You have enjoyed all the Blessings and Bounties of Allah, yet you do not give Him due praise for it;
10 You have buried your dead, but you have taken no admonition.

How then will your du’aa be accepted?”

Tawfeeq

If you do not make an intention of acquiring Khair (Deeni goodness) from ‘Ilm, then you will be deprived of Tawfeeq.

Volunteer to Help

Assalam Alaykum,

Its been a real long time since I have written something here in my own words but I felt the time to do so was right.

Firstly I want to apologise if I do not reply to comments quickly or even fail to reply at all.  Unfortunately my time has become rather restricted in what Ican do for Haq Islam recently.  Just in case you didn’t know I have a wife and two young kids, a full time job, am a student of the arabic language and several other things I won’t mention.  However, I do read comments and where I can, I do respond and try to help.  Do forgive me if you are one of these people that has not received a reply.

Secondly I want all those reading to volunteer to help.  How?

  1. Pick a/ your favourite post/ page from Haq Islam and link to it in your signature for any forums you use
  2. For the more graphics keen, create avatars and banners and link to pages and articles on Haq Islam using them on forums/ websites etc
  3. Forward and share posts/ pages Muslims in your email address book
  4. Share posts via twitter/ facebook/ Digg etc
  5. Using Microsoft word create a mini ebook in pdf format using some of your favourite articles and share them with everyone
  6. Talk about/ share the articles on your own blog/ site but please link back us. It really does annoy me when people use not only the words but also images from our articles and don’t bother to mention where they got it from
  7. For any blogs and sites you comment on leave a article on Haq Islam as your URL

During Majlis a Shaykh mentioned that helping and getting involved with the work of deen is one of the ways to ensure steady progress in reforming yourself as a better Muslim. How true that is because at the very least you will be busy in doing good and receiving reward for it, rather than engaging in sin or other futile activities.  Do try and get involved, even only five minutes of your time each week is aprreciated.

It still always strikes me as amazing that we can send jokes and funny video clips around the world in a matter of hours but when it comes to helping the deen we hesitate and falter to pass on the correct teachings of our beautiful religion. As the saying goes, ‘many hands make light work’, so please don’t just leave it up to a few and get involved. All of the above can really apply to any Islamic site so there is no excuse not to help your favourite authentic Islamic website, even if you don’t help Haq Islam.

I have some old islamic blogs which are no longer updated and I would love to bring them back to life if one you can commit to posting at least once a week on them.  Drop me a comment below if you are interested.

Thirdly, a reminder that the closing date for entries into the Haq Islam competition http://www.haqislam.org//competition/ is 8 April, so if you haven’t already entered then please do so.

Finally, may I request you all to remember me and my family in your duas.

Assalam Alaykum
