On Friday…

Importance of Friday in Islam

It is a great mercy from Allah ﷻ upon the Ummah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that the teachings of Islam have been preserved and passed down to us in their pure form. Among the many divine commandments is the special emphasis placed on Jumuah (Friday), a day of immense spiritual significance and blessing. Known in Arabic as Yawm al-Jumu‘ah, meaning “the Day of Gathering,” it is a weekly occasion for Muslims to unite in worship, reflection, and renewal of faith.

Friday holds a unique place in the Islamic calendar. It is not simply another day for prayer, but one that Allah ﷻ has chosen above others. The Jumuah prayer is a communal obligation, bringing together Muslims from all walks of life to stand shoulder to shoulder in remembrance of their Lord. However, for many, the actions associated with this blessed day have become routine, lacking the deep spiritual understanding that makes Jumu’ah truly transformative.

On one Friday, Rasulullah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said:
“O Muslims! Allah Ta’ala has made this day a day of eid . So have a bath on this day, whoever has perfume should apply it, and use the miswaak.”
(Ibn Majah)

“The person who has a bath on Friday and goes early to the masjid on foot, and not by a vehicle, listens to the khutbah and does not do any foolish act while it is being delivered, will get the reward of one year’s ibaadah, one year’s fasting, and one year’s salaat; for every step that he takes.”
